Pledging to bring a fresh perspective and new leadership, Darryl Godfrey, who led economic development projects at the state and local level, filed today as a candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 10th district, where he hopes to fill the seat held by Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) for nearly twelve years until his passing last month.
Godfrey is the chief operating officer of the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority and worked closely with Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a top official at the Brick City Development Corporation. He moved into the public sector after a career in banking.
“This is a moment of tremendous uncertainty in the 10th congressional district, as well as in our nation as a whole, and I believe that it is critically important for accomplished leaders with real experience and skills to step forward and do their part to serve the greater good,” said Godfrey, a Newark native.
Hell run in a July 16 special Democratic primary to fill Paynes unexpired term.
He filed with 815 signatures on his nominating petition, something his campaign suggested was evidence of his team’s early organizing ability.
Godfrey’s campaign also says he can raise money, and that he has a willingness to partly self-fund his campaign.
“I’ve devoted my professional life to helping urban communities thrive by leveraging both private and public sector resources, and I know that with my experience and perspective I can deliver real progress to Essex, Union and Hudson counties,” Godfrey stated. “I look forward to meeting with residents from throughout the district and sharing my vision for how we can build stronger, more affordable communities that support all of our hopes and dreams.”
