Carol Murphy, Joe Cohn, and Herb Conaway will face off in the first debate in the campaign for the Democratic primary for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd district on Tuesday, May 14, at 8 PM.
The 60-minute debate between the three Democrats seeking to succeed Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) is sponsored by the New Jersey Globe, On New Jersey, and the Rebovich Institute of New Jersey Politics at Rider University and will be streamed on the New Jersey Globe, On New Jersey, C-SPAN, Facebook Live, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.
Laura Jones, the host of “New Jersey Politics with Laura Jones,” a weekly public affairs show on On New Jersey, will serve as the debate moderator. Panelists will include New Jersey Globe political reporter Joey Fox, New Jersey Globe editor David Wildstein, and Micah Rasmussen, the director of the Rebovich Institute. Questions will also come from some members of the public.
Murphy is the Assembly Majority Whip, Cohn is a civil rights attorney, and Conaway is the chairman of the Assembly Health Committee.
The New Jersey Globe made the decision to invite Murphy, Conaway, and Cohn based on the level of activity of their campaigns and fundraising. A final determination on debate invitations for the two other candidates will be made by May 7.
Two Democratic candidates for the 8th district congressional seat, Rep. Rob Menendez (D-Jersey City) and Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, will face off in their first debate on Sunday, May 5 at 8 PM. That debate is also sponsored by the New Jersey Globe, On Jersey, and Rider University.
